Welcome to another ETalk, where we introduce an amazing person at Elevate K-12 involved in revolutionizing education through high-quality live online instruction inside schools!
Name: Monica V.
Location: Houston, Texas
How Long Have You Been With Elevate K-12: <1 year
Expert/Superstar In: Spanish
What excites you most about teaching your particular subject?
Spanish is my native language, so naturally, I’m excited when others are interested in learning it. Learning a foreign language is one more opportunity to connect with people. Learning Spanish facilitates empathy, enhanced perspectives, and meaningful multicultural experiences!
How do you make live, online instruction engaging?
I bring high energy and well-prepared content to every class. I try to be very present and engaged with my students, giving them little room for idle time.
What strategies do you use to effectively reach your students who are working below grade-level expectations?
It’s so important to have a genuine connection with all of your students, but especially with those who may be struggling from time to time. I like to encourage students throughout the class using our private chat features, sometimes providing additional instruction or assistance. I also try to make a personal connection, making sure to ask about their games, recitals, pets, or other things that matter to them.
What do you like about working from home/remotely?
I love the flexibility of setting my own schedule, and you really can’t beat the commute! It gives me more time to do what I love, which is to teach, while also having more time for my family. In this current pandemic, it gives me a safe alternative to continue working.
How do you ensure your students have been successful whether they’re learning at home, school, or both?
They have access to some pretty cool technology and resources through Elevate K-12, which allows them to participate in class, even when they have to be home. Participation is crucial to learning success, so I make sure that every student is actively involved in our lesson. Sometimes that means giving them access to their microphones and/or digital pens so that they can practice their pronunciation or answer a question by filling in the blank on our virtual whiteboard. I’m able to share videos as well as review content using interactive games. I give my students clear and consistent expectations and try to have as much fun as possible.
Tell us a little more about who you are–what do you like to do? What’s your favorite hobby? What’s something super surprising about you? Be creative!
I’m a California girl, but I’ve lived in Texas most of my life. I’ve been married to my husband for 15 years and we have three beautiful boys together 13, 12, and 9 years old. I started teaching online four years ago due to several relocations (3 different states), and my husband’s work/travel schedule. I attended college on a dance scholarship, I enjoy reading, and I’ve run several half marathons.
Thanks, Monica V.!
