Welcome to another ETalk, where we introduce an amazing person at Elevate K-12 involved in revolutionizing education through high-quality live online instruction inside schools!
Name: Jennifer H.
Location: Kailua, Hawai’i
Experience With Elevate K-12: 1 year
Expert/Superstar In: Math
What excites you most about teaching your particular subject?
I love teaching math. Math helps to develop critical thinking skills. I enjoy teaching a concept and guiding students through problem-solving processes. It is not a subject that comes easy to most. It takes grit and perseverance. What I love most about teaching math is witnessing my students’ moments of accomplishment when finishing a challenging problem and knowing it was solved well.
What do you like most about live, online instruction?
What I like most about teaching online is the growth, not just from students, but in myself. Teaching for Elevate this year has been full of challenges. To overcome these difficulties and connect with my students, I have had to adapt and learn new methods. In the classroom, it’s been a lot of trial and error. The students are used to me trying out a new tool in the class. Some work, some don’t. Thankfully, the students are very patient with me.
Elevate K-12 works with a lot of struggling students. What do you like most about working with those students?
In the traditional classroom, I taught inclusion math. My struggling students in the traditional classroom are similar to my online classroom. I love working with these students because I believe everyone can learn. I like to be the one that gets the students to recognize that. My strategy has always been to highlight student successes to build confidence through positive interactions.
What do you like about working from home/remotely?
Working remotely gives me the flexibility to work from home, at a time convenient for me. This has allowed me to be more present when I’m home with my family, more active with my daughter’s school, more healthy with eating and training plans.
Describe your best moment teaching live and online. Be specific!
At the beginning of the year the Classroom Coach (CC) identified a student that was struggling, but too shy to speak up in class, chat, or message. She would talk to the CC about concerns after school, but never during class or through messages. Over the months, although our CC has changed multiple times, our connection has strengthened. She started reaching out through PM and the alert. My proudest moment is overcoming those barriers for not just that particular student, but others. I know my students that are putting in effort, because they let me know in ways that are unique to themselves.
Tell us a little more about who you are–what do you like to do? What’s your favorite hobby? What’s something super surprising about you? Be creative!
I am a mom of 2, a military spouse, and a former Navy Corpsman. I love to travel and move. I would say I have a nomadic spirit. I love the outdoors and hiking. I enjoy participating in 5Ks in my spare time. I plan on participating in a 10K next month. I have recently taken on baking as a hobby to do with my kids. Everything looks awful but tastes great. My New Year’s resolution is to master the Cake Pop by 2021!
Thanks, Jennifer H.!
