Welcome to another ETalk, where we introduce an amazing person at Elevate K-12 involved in revolutionizing education through high-quality live online instruction inside schools!
Name: Richard Z.
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Experience With Elevate K-12: 4 years
Expert/Superstar In: Math and Reading Instructor
What excites you most about teaching your particular subject?
The variety! I take on a lot of substitution sessions, where the instructor needs to call out for one reason or another. One day I’m teaching 3rd grade reading, and the very next class is 11th grade quadratics, and I quite enjoy being well versed in nearly all the classes we teach. It’s never dull or repetitive for me, not just because of the subjects, but all the students and personalities I get to meet.
Elevate K-12 works with a lot of struggling students. What do you like most about working with those students?
Something I enjoy is taking something that looks like a number or word soup and translating it into something that the students can understand. Everyone is different, and it may take explaining a concept in multiple different ways, but it only needs to click once.
What do you like about working from home/remotely?
The ability to work almost anywhere, no question. I can even house-sit for friends and family in more distant locations without interrupting work. Not just that, but I’m able to reach a wide range of students in places I’ve never even been to, all from my home computer. Students that may have otherwise still been struggling.
Describe your best moment teaching live and online. Be specific!
Honestly, my favorite moments are where the student gives the wrong answer at first, and then, without any prompting from me, they go “wait… that’s not it… OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!” From there, the lessons usually move much faster and smoother, and it’s just a matter of practicing and driving home what they’ve learned. The fact that I can say I’ve had that happen more than once is amazing.
It’s helping students connect the dots for themselves, that’s what I’m here for. That’s what I’m supposed to be doing. True comprehension, not memorization for some test.
Outside of working with students, what do you like to do?
I’m a bit of a nerd, I’m afraid. I’ve always been a big fan of games, old and new, digital and physical. Be it card games, board games, video games, pen and paper games, I’ve tried my hand at quite a few. I even compete in tournaments!
I don’t do WELL in tournaments, mind you… but I still compete.
Thanks, Richard Z.!
